There are about as many different types of lace as there are lace wedding dresses. Today most lace is made by machine, though some designers—like Alexander McQueen who made Kate Middleton’s wedding gown—prefer handmade lace.
The art of lace making is old and complex and there are several different techniques. Each produces gorgeous variations on the basic lace pattern.

Needle lace: You’ll see this lace a lot. It’s made by first embroidering the thick outlines of the lace’s designs. Then the outlines are filled in with a variety of stitches that make up that particular lace design.
Bobbin lace: This is also known as pillow lace and is truly elegant and delicate. The threads are wound onto bobbins (one kind of bobbin is the small one you’ve seen in fabric stores or the little one that goes into a sewing machine). The lace is made by setting pins into a pillow and weaving the threads through the pins.
There’s one more type of lace: Leavers lace. This lace is made on a loom, is super-complicated, and really expensive. The lace on Kate Middleton’s dress is Leavers lace.
